Merely 6 months after legalizing gay-marriage, Bermuda terminates it

Bermuda to become first territory to legalise - and then ban- same-sex marriage in just seven months

"If Governor Rankin signs this measure into law, it will rip away the right of loving same-sex couples in Bermuda to marry".

According to Grant Spurling, a lawyer who represented the couple in the marriage equality case, "the [Bermuda Supreme] Court is bound by legislation" under Bermuda's legal system, unlike in the United States where courts can overturn legislation or policies that violate the Constitution. But it appears unlikely that the governor will block the bill.

Under the proposed new bill, same-sex couples won't be able to marry, but will instead enter into a "domestic partnership".

On Friday, the House of Assembly passed a legislation that replaces same-sex marriage with domestic partnerships.

“With global business and tourism as its major industries, Bermudas people, worldwide reputation and economy would all be harmed by this legislation. "Our last hope is that equality and common sense prevail, and the bill will not receive the requisite signature from the Governor of Bermuda".

Same-sex couples were able to legally marry in California again in June 2013 after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled Prop 8's proponents did not have legal standing to appeal previous rulings against them.

They thanked the 10 MPS who voted against the Bill, commending their "leadership and compassion to recognize all people deserve to love and be loved".

"Domestic partners will have the same benefits as married couples under this Act - something which they now do not have".

OUTBermuda, the territory's LGBT advocacy group, said in a statement on its Facebook page that it is "disappointed" with the government's actions. Sexual orientation was added as a protected characteristic under the territory's Human Rights Act in 2013.

"We are taking away marriage equality rights from the LGBTQ community", Gibbons said, according to the Jamaican Observer.

Many in the LGBT community in Bermuda have derided the decision, slamming the move as "backward" and "patronizing".

The Bermuda Tourism Authority in a letter it sent to senators on Tuesday noted North Carolina's economy lost $3.76 billion after then-Gov. Among Crown Dependencies, same-sex marriage is legal or soon to be legal in Isle of Man, Guernsey, and Alderney, but not Sark, or Jersey, where the legislature is set to vote for an equal marriage law next January. "As it stands now, they can have the name marriage but without the benefits".
