Gov. Andrew Cuomo wants to take guns from domestic abusers

"What it says, is if you are convicted of a domestic violence offense you have to surrender your guns", Cuomo said. Cuomo said he wanted to close the loophole that allows gun-owners convicted of domestic violence misdemeanors, including some assault and battery charges or strangulation, to retain their firearms.

Right now judges are given discretion on whether to confiscate guns when an order of protection is issued against a person.

The proposal follows a flood of requests from gun-safety advocates. These orders result in the suspension of firearm licenses. The following month, 26 people were killed after a gunman opened fire on churchgoers attending a Sunday service at a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas.

While a record of domestic violence does not predict mass shootings, research has shown that legislation restricting firearms for domestic violence offenders can have a positive effect.

According to the Governor's Office, domestic violence and threats against women have been linked to nine of the ten deadliest mass shootings in USA history.

Cuomo, a Democrat, announced Wednesday he will push for a measure that would add all domestic-violence misdemeanors to the state's list of crimes that force the surrender of firearms.

NY law prohibits the possession of firearms for individuals convicted of felony or "serious" offenses. If its in the case of the U.S. Congress, the taxpayers pay. Why? Why?

The proposal would bolster the state's law to match a federal law banning misdemeanor domestic abusers from carrying firearms.

Cuomo said he will again forward legislation in the upcoming legislative session that would apply the state freedom of information law equally to the executive and legislative branches.
