Delhi's private hospital wrongly declared a new born dead has died in another hospital

The infant died due to an infection at a nursing home after battling for life for almost a week - which jolted the entire family, which was demanding the arrest of erring doctors.

Max Hospital had earlier terminated the services of two doctors - Dr A.P. Mehta and Dr Vishal Gupta - who were allegedly involved in the case. The baby boy died at a nursing home in Pitampura after battling for life for almost a week.

Parents of a twin born prematurely at Max hospital Shalimar Bagh alleged that the hospital declared one of them dead when the baby still had signs of life.

The Delhi police said on Wednesday that it had transferred the case to its crime unit.

According to the twins' grandfather, the stunned family rushed the newborn to a nearby hospital where they were told that their baby was still alive, local media reported. On November 30, a woman had given birth to the boy and a stillborn girl at the Shalimar Bagh hospital.

Meanwhile, authorities at the Max hospital released a statement on Wednesday, lending their support to the family, but did not comment on the allegations of negligence.

Family members said it was unclear whether the baby would survive. The hospital also sent its condolences to the parents after hearing that the baby had died. While we understand that survival in extreme preterm births is rare, it is always painful for the parents and family. The baby's uncle said that they will continue to protest outside Max Hospital. The report suggested that the doctors had not conducted electrocardiography to check whether the babies it declared dead were still alive or not. "We wish them the strength to cope with their loss", the statement said.

The news of the death comes a day after the Delhi government probe team, in it's preliminary findings, found "the hospital guilty of not having followed prescribed medical norms". On December 2, Jain had said the hospital's licence could be cancelled if a probe found it guilty of medical negligence.
