Environmentalists and Native American tribes said that they would challenge Mr Trump in court.

"Trump's unprecedented, illegal action is a brutal blow to our public lands, an affront to Native Americans and a disgrace to the presidency", said Randi Spivak, the public lands program director at the nonprofit Center for Biological Diversity.

The authority to create national monuments is afforded to presidents under a 1906 law called the Antiquities Act, and in the century since the law was passed, it has been used to protect millions of acres of wilderness and scores of culturally significant sites. Patagonia has been in the fight to protect public lands for nearly 30 years- and we are proud to have played a part in the establishment of several national monuments, including Bears Ears National Monument in Utah and Basin and Range and Gold Butte National Monuments in Nevada. Outdoor retailer Patagonia is no stranger to throwing its weight behind worthy causes, particularly those aligned with its mission to "use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis".
