"He abused my trust, abused my body and left scars on my psyche that may never heal", Maroney wrote in a victim-impact letter to the federal court where Nassar is to be sentenced on Thursday.

Grand Rapids - A federal judge on Thursday sentenced child molester Larry Nassar to 60 years in prison for receiving and possessing 37,000 images of child pornography and attempting to destroy them to avoid being caught.

He agreed a plea bargain with prosecutors and was given 20 years for each count.

McKayla Maroney, Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas - three members of the United States of America gymnastics team that won gold at the 2012 London Olympics - are among those who've come forward with allegations of sexual abuse by Nassar.

"I had a dream to go to the Olympics", Maroney wrote in October in alleging she was abused by Nassar, "and the things that I had to endure to get there, were unnecessary, and disgusting".

Nassar worked at Michigan State University and at USA Gymnastics, the Indianapolis-based group that trains Olympians. Nassar has admitted to molesting girls in his care when they sought treatment with him. Klages has denied those claims.

Shannon Smith, an attorney for Nassar, said he was "devastated" by the sentence and that he would appeal the sentence.

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette this week urged Michigan State to release an internal investigation into the university's handling of the allegations.

Nassar's attorneys had asked the federal judge for leniency in court filings, arguing Nassar had helped fellow inmates and taken Bible classes since his arrest almost a year ago, the State Journal said.
