Kenya government threatens opposition with 'treason' charge

Attorney General Githu Muigai did not name anyone, but opposition leader Raila Odinga said last month that he would be inaugurated by a people's assembly on December 12 - Kenya's Independence Day.

Under Kenyan law, treason is punishable by death.

The team preparing for Odinga's inauguration wrote to Governors Anyang' Nyong'o (Kisumu), Charity Ngilu (Kitui), Hassan Joho (Mombasa), Cornel Rasanga (Siaya), Cyprian Awiti (Homa Bay), Amason Kingi (Kilifi), Okoth Obado (Migori), Kivutha Kibwana (Makueni), Odeke Ojaamong (Busia), Wycliffe Oparanya (Kakamega) and Wilber Ottichilo (Vihiga) requesting them to arrange for a venue where Odinga will take Oath of Office as people's president.

Prof Muigai said the government would not stop at anything to prevent the breach of the rule of law and the constitution.

Odinga also repeated his accusations against Kenya security forces, saying dozens of people have been killed in the months of election unrest and "nobody is talking about it".

Despite a warning from the Government, the former Premier's defiant allies are charging ahead with plans to swear him as the People's President in the National People's Assembly.

He said the national government retains the right to review the funds allocated to the concerned counties.

Odinga successfully challenged Kenyatta's August re-election but then boycotted the new vote in October, demanding electoral reforms. "Yet they have the audacity to come and advise us to forget and move on". Kenyatta won the second poll with more than 98 percent of the vote.

Some Republicans want a large boost in the defense cap, and Democrats are demanding an equal increase in non-defense spending. He said they want "illegal immigrants pouring into our country, bringing with them crime, tremendous amounts of crime".

Without directly mentioning the ceremony or the United States, Odinga said on Thursday that Kenyans should be left to solve their own problems.
