The 26-year-old flew to New Zealand to tune-up his game with Canterbury in a one-day competition, hoping to get back in the whites with his country 2-0 down in the Ashes series. Not only did they lose the Adelaide by 120 runs to go down 2-0, but across the Tasman in New Zealand, Ben Stokes, who is now suspended has endured a torrid time in Canterbury.

However, Stokes returned to competitive cricket last Sunday after New Zealand's domestic side Canterbury signed the all-rounder as their overseas player.

"Both Alex Hales and Ben Stokes are included, though their involvement remains subject to any relevant legal or disciplinary developments in relation to the incident in Bristol in September".

As was the case ahead of the ongoing Ashes series, England's selectors were instructed to name their strongest squad for a five-match ODI rubber beginning in Melbourne on January 14.
