The magazine's shortlist, announced Monday, included 2016 victor President Donald Trump, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, special counsel and former FBI Director Robert Mueller, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, the Dreamers and former San Francisco 49ers football player Colin Kaepernick.

"The idea that influential, inspirational individuals shape the world could not be more apt this year".

The #MeToo movement represents the people, mostly women, who have fueled a worldwide discussion about sexual harassment and assault.

TIME magazine's Person of the Year is always a highly anticipated honor, but after the past year of unprecedented upheaval, the honor is going to the group of women breaking the silence.

The court's unsigned orders on Monday urged appeals courts to quickly determine whether the latest ban was lawful. Lawyers for Hawaii, which is challenging the ban, told the justices that there was no reason to make changes now.

Robert Mueller made the list for his investigation into Russian Federation meddling in the 2016 presidential election, and it's connections to the Trump campaign that could topple the president.

Trump was Time's 2016 "Person of the Year". "But it has actually been simmering for years, decades, centuries", Time's story said.

Time also named the Dreamers - young adults whose legal status in the United States was put in limbo this year. But it took off last month when a slew of high-profile men were publicly accused of sexual misconduct, beginning with Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein.

Next up were the Dreamers, whose plight has been the subject of much political discourse after President Trump and his administration revoked an Obama-era program meant to give the children who were born to illegal immigrants a path to citizenship in the United States.

Patty Jenkins, meanwhile, directed one of the year's biggest movies.

TIME magazine picks its Person of the Year on an individual or group of people who the magazine's editors believe have most influenced news and events of the past year, "for good or ill". (The magazine's long list of controversial choices include Adolf Hilter, Joseph Stalin, and Ayatullah Khomeini). The announcement was made Wednesday morning.
