Suspect in shooting of Missouri officer dies

An Arnold police officer was shot inside a police SUV by a handcuffed burglary suspect he was taking to the police department to be booked, authorities said.

Police said he shot an officer on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident reportedly began around 12:30 p.m.as a burglary call in a residential area. The suspect was caught a short time later at Zingers Mart, a convenience store at a Phillips 66 gas station on Jeffco Blvd. - just two miles from the Arnold police station.

The shooting happened on the Arnold Police Department parking lot inside a police SUV the officer was driving, and after the shooting, the vehicle crashed into a fence and a diesel gas tank near the police station, but the auto did not hit the building, Capt. Gary Higginbotham of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said.

Officers inside watched on camera as the black police SUV approached an area of the building where suspects are brought inside. They believe the Klahs stole a gun from the home. Police aren't sure if the suspect's wound was self-inflicted. Jefferson County Sheriff's Capt. Gary Higginbotham says the officer was shot on the back of the neck or head.

Both O'Conner and the suspect were shot.

KMOX's Kevin Killeen is at the hospital, and our Brett Blume is at the Arnold Police Station. His name has not been released. Highways near the shooting scene were closed so the Arnold officer could be rushed to a hospital. St. Louis County officers are assisting in the investigation.
