Osmania University suspends classes after protests on campus, exams postponed

All the examinations in the campus, constituent, affiliated and autonomous colleges of Osmania University scheduled on 5th- 6th December postponed due to students' agitation following alleged suicide by a student.

Despite a crackdown by the police, who took several protesters into custody on Sunday, students gathered in large numbers on Monday morning at around 10 am and shouted slogans against Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and the police. He said the government should give Rs 50 lakh as compensation to Murali's family or else the student organisation would not allow the police to shift his body from the hostel. The police arrested 22 students on Monday, charging them with violence on campus.

In the gathering of thousands of youth and students, condolences to Murali were paid. "However, they started marching forward and started pelting stones at us".

These students and political parties took to protesting within and outside the Osmania University campus, condemning the state government.

Murali, a first-generation student, hailed from Dulapur village in Jagadevpur Mandal, Medak district.

However, the police have denied that the journalists were detained for long; they said they were let go immediately from the police station. Murali - reportedly a physics topper - was a first-year student of MSc in the university.
