Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe defied expectations he would resign, pledging to preside over a Zanu-PF congress next month even though the ruling party had removed him as its leader hours earlier.

Generals in the military, who have seized power, have given into many of Mugabe's demands, including full immunity for himself and his wife Grace, and that he would keep his private properties.

They have reinstated sacked deputy president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, as the interim leader PF.

It was a historic day when the old Zimbabwe, a once-promising African nation with a disintegrating economy and a mood of fear about the consequences of challenging Mugabe, became something new, with a population united, at least temporarily, in its fervor for change and a joyful openness that would have seemed fanciful even a few days ago.

Now people in the country are said to be anxious about their country's fate, with more protests planned to put pressure on Mugabe to quit.

With the deadline having come and gone, opposition activists and the influential war veterans association have announced that more demonstrations will take place, calling on Zimbabweans to take to the streets from tomorrow. The group organized a rally in Harare on Saturday, in which tens of thousands of people turned up to call for him to step down.

"We want to see his back now", Mr Mutsvangwa said.
