Manchester United are "increasingly resigned" to the prospect of Marouane Fellaini leaving the club for free next summer.

Fellaini's performances led United to trigger the one-year contract extension in his contract at the start of the year - but extending his deal beyond the summer is proving much tougher.

United have not given up hope that he will agree new terms, but sources told ESPN FC they were prepared to risk losing him for nothing rather than pushing for a fee in January.

Fellaini's current contract expires at the end of the season and potentially he could sign a pre-contract agreement with another side in January.

However, the report also claims that Arsenal are interested in the Belgian alongside Inter Milan and Besiktas.

Fellaini's four years with United have been mixed, and the former Everton man, brought to Old Trafford by David Moyes, has often been used in a substitute role.

Jose Mourinho is keen not to lose Fellaini in January.

Galatasaray have a long-standing interest in Fellaini but a host of foreign and Premier League clubs are expected to jostle for his signature in the event Mourinho fails to persuade him to stay at United beyond a fifth season.

That Marouane Fellaini's status at Manchester United would be such a talking point, even six months ago, shows the progress he's made with fans.
