UC Browser, owned and developed by the Alibaba Group-owned UC Web, is popular for its data compression capabilities which enables it to load web pages quicker than its competitors.

Google seems to have taken down the UC Browser application from Play Store, although UC Web's other offering - the UC Browser Mini - is still available for download.

While Chrome has since reinstated some of its dominance, back in June, UC Browser became India's favourite mobile browser and at one point grasped over 50 percent market share. The report also ranked the UC Browser as the sixth most-downloaded application on Android platform in India. The mobile-friendly version of the web browser seemingly disappeared without a trace earlier today, just weeks after the app topped 500 million downloads on Google's mobile store. However, there is no official statement from both Google and UC Web on the situation. As a result, its removal is a shocking step to say the least.

There weren't that many browsers when Google released the first version of Android OS.

The app, which is particularly popular in India, has been delisted from the app store for misleading and unhealthy promotions. Google is taking a strict stance on apps using dubious tricks to increase install base or spread ad malware to steal user information.

Having said that, UC Browser also happens to be a popular mobile browser in India. The reason appears to be misleading campaigns UC Browser was running. UCWeb has previously denied any wrongdoing, stating that it "will not do anything to breach the trust of our users" and that it takes "security and privacy very seriously".

For that reason, Sessions' suggestion has raised fresh questions about the independence of the Justice Department in the Trump administration.
