According to reports, the incident occurred late Monday night in Adambakkam area when Akash, classmate of the girl, barged at the residence of Indhuja, engineering graduate, and called her out the house.

A 21-year old woman was set afire allegedly by a former schoolmate for declining his marriage proposal, police said today. He started stalking her after she rejected him and the situation got so bad that Induja had to stop going to work, the report added.

Sindhuja was allegedly set ablaze by 25-year-old Akash, who is in police custody now.

Her father Shanmugam (48) is working in Dubai. The victim's mother is said to have suffered 49 per cent burns and her is said to be in the ICU. He was however overpowered by the neighbours and handed over to the police.

On hearing their screams, the neighbours rushed to the victim's house.
