General Motors can produce great vehicles when it wants to. The auto was discontinued after 1995, production totaling fewer than 7,000 units.

The rest seem to be mostly also rans in their respective category.

Chevrolet returned the Corvette ZR1 to the lineup for 2009. The ZR1 weighs 10 pounds more than the Z06, and 171 pounds more than the previous ZR1.

"I've never driven a Corvette like this before, and nobody else has either, because there's never been one like this before", said Mark Reuss, executive vice president, Global Product Development, Purchasing and Supply Chain.

The Corvette ZR1's exclusive LT5 supercharged engine, which is rated at an SAE-certified 755 horsepower (563 kW) and 715 lb-ft of torque (969 Nm), is establishing a new benchmark in performance.

A rear low wing is standard (this one helps achieve the highest top speed) while a High Wing (two-way adjustable) can be specified for those who are after high downforce on the track. But the latest ZR1 comes with a supercharged, 6.2-liter LT5 V-8 engine.

Married to the engine is either a seven-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic with steering wheel paddle shifters.

In the meantime, the new ZR1 is unlikely to be converted to right-hand drive and offered in Australia.

Behind those gaping air intakes and beneath that carbon fiber hood beats the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1's 755-horsepower heart.

An all-new front fascia is created to channel air for propulsion-system and drivetrain cooling, with four new radiators bringing the heat-exchanger total to 13. The model also features a unique carbon-fiber "halo" hood and four new radiators. Chevrolet didn't go into specifics but confirmed the model has a top speed in excess of 210 miles per hour (337 km/h). This unit generates a maximum of 755PS/969Nm and has a claimed top speed of 338kmph. All models also feature a Chevrolet-first, downforce-enhancing front underwing.

The new design package complements the Corvette ZR1's tradition of offering maximum performance with refinement and design distinction.

The cockpit will boast leather and faux-suede seat upholstery. Optionally, customers can fit their new 2019 ZR1 with heated and ventilated Nappa leather seats, a carbon-fiber adorned steering wheel and Performance Data Recorder, among other things.

American muscle comes in many shapes and forms, but none are as savage as this - the new 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1.
