Chitrakoot Assembly bypoll: Congress candidate Nilanshu Chaturvedi wins by over 14000 votes

Congress candidate Nilanshu Chaturvedi today registered a victory in the Chitrakoot Assembly by-polls in Madhya Pradesh and defeated the BJP candidate Shankar Dayal Tripathi by margin of over 14,000 votes.

Congress chief whip in the Lok Sabha Jyotiraditya Scindia, former Union Minister Kamal Nath, Leader of Opposition in Madhya Pradesh Assembly Ajay Singh had canvassed for Chaturvedi.

The election was called after the death of Chitrakoot's Congress legislator Prem Singh.

According to the Election Commission (EC), there were 1.98 lakh voters in the Chitrakoot Assembly constituency. Heavyweight MLA Prem Singh (65) had won the seat three times - he won the seat in 1998 for the first time and was re-elected in 2003 and then 2013.

Madhya Pradesh Chitrakoot assembly by-elections result of Satna district to be announced today. At least 257 polling booths with VVPAT (Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail) machines were posted in the constituency for the by-poll election.

Though 12 candidates contested the by-election, the fight was on between Chaturvedi and Tripathi. However, BJP and Congress were under the spotlight.

Congress candidate Nilanshu Chaturvedi got 68,810 votes while Bharatiya Janata Party's Shankar Dayal Tripathi got 52,677 votes in the crucial bye-polls. However, he had lost the seat to BJP's Surendra Singh Gaharwar in the 2008 polls.

"The winds of change are in the air".

The ruling party tried to find solace in the fact that Chitrakoot has been a traditional stronghold of the Congress.
