Travis Alabanza, who identifies as transfeminine, was turned away from the changing rooms at the Topshop branch in Manchester, and was advised by retail assistants to use Topman's changing rooms instead.
While Alabanza said they were used to attracting attention as a trans person when out shopping, the additional reaction from Topshop staff made it worse.
A spokesperson at Topshop/Topman told GSN: 'All Topshop and Topman customers are free to use any of the fitting rooms located within our stores'.
"In this new world we have, the LGBTI world, maybe what we need is a lesbian, bisexual, trans, intersex, separate clothing places to get dressed and we could have seven different change rooms", 2GB's Chris Smith told Sunrise on Friday.
But Travis argued that Urban Outfitters is already successfully leading the way with changing rooms open to all genders.
Sean Parker Wonders What Facebook Is 'Doing to Our Children's Brains'
Early Facebook adviser Sean Parker on Wednesday slammed the company he played a pivotal role in building. I value intimacy.' And I would say, "We'll get you eventually,"' said Parker.
However, despite this being company policy, Alabanza was refused access to the changing room in the Topshop section of the store and was told to use the facility in the Topman section. "When you're actually physically in these bathrooms I surprise myself because I thought "oh, I'm not sure I like this".
A move towards gender-neutral toilets and change rooms has sparked a debate on Sunrise.
They added: 'She wasn't rude, but she wasn't sympathetic either'.
They added: 'Gendered changing rooms effect and put queer and trans shoppers at risk from harassment from other shoppers.
Travis pointed out on social media: "Who made you in charge of deciding who is woman enough to use your changing room?"
Veterans Day - a day of honor, to honor
The public is invited to attend the event, which will honor all veterans and recognize Vietnam-era veterans. The United States of America annually honors those who have served in its military on Veterans Day.
'I said, "I'm not going to be safe down there".
When Alabanza tweeted about the incident shortly after it happened, several other people responded saying they'd had similar experiences.
This isn't the first time a high street store has been called out for discriminating against people who are transgender or gender non-binary.
While unarguably a awful situation, perhaps Alabanza's experience will highlight to other companies the need to go above and beyond simply changing their official line.
