Evra banned for rest of the season by UEFA after Marseille fan kick

The former Manchester United full-back was sent off prior to the start of the Europa League clash with Vitoria earlier this month after clashing with the Marseille fan.

"First of all for Patrice Evra, who has obviously understood all the consequences of his act and that he can no longer fulfill his passion (of playing) for Marseille", club president Jacques-Henri Eyraud said.

The 36-year-old has already been suspended by Marseille for his actions - and with his contract with the Ligue 1 side due to expire at the end of the campaign, it seems nearly certain that the former French worldwide has played his last competitive game at the Velodrome Stadium.

While the club are yet to announce any sanction against the player, UEFA confirmed on Friday that Evra's absence from action in continental competitions would extend until June 30 next year.

That said, if (as seems likely) his contract with Marseille is terminated, he would be free to play outside of Europe until the suspension expires. They also again criticised the attitude of the supporters whose provocation led to the player's reaction.

As well as his release from Marseille, UEFA have handed him a seven-month ban from all European competition.

Marseille, who have also been fined €25,000 by UEFA and ordered to pay for damages caused by the club's fans to Guimaraes' ground within 30 days, reiterated that they intend to take action against the fans involved.

"By mutual agreement, Olympique de Marseille and Patrice Evra made a decision to end their collaboration", said a statement on their website.
