Rossi took the physical nature of the race in his stride, accepting it reflected the changing state of the sport at its highest level.

Rossi felt he had the pace to run with Marquez until the end of the race but highlighted an incident with Ecstar Suzuki rider Iannone, which he says thwarted his chances and allowed Marquez to make a break.

The Spaniard, who now leads the championship, claimed his sixth win of the season at the Phillip Island circuit to stretch out a 33-point lead from his rival for the title, Italian Andrea Dovizioso (Team Ducati), who finished 13th, reports Efe.

The Spanish Honda rider, who leads Dovizioso by 11 points with three rounds left, will start on the inside of the grid, alongside his compatriot Maverick Vinales and French Yamaha racer Johann Zarco.
