The Communication Workers Union (CWU) was planning a mass 48-hour strike however, Royal Mail won an injunction at the High Court Thursday afternoon, blocking the largest postal stirke in eight years.

Shares in Royal Mail edged up 0.5 per cent in the minutes after the court decision.

Royal Mail had given CWU a deadline of 12 noon on Monday to call off the strike, which was planned for October 19 and 20.

The industrial action would have been the first strike at Royal Mail since the postal group was privatised in 2015.

The company has written to the CWU invoking a "legally binding external mediation process", and reiterating that any industrial action would be unlawful.

More than 100 postal workers including Dave Ward, the CWU's general secretary, gathered outside the high court for the verdict.

The postal services company said the United Kingdom higher court has ruled that contractual dispute resolution procedures under the Agenda for Growth must be followed before industrial action can take place. The judged ruled that pressing ahead with the strike without following the dispute resolution procedures, which include involving an external party to mediate on talks, would be unlawful.

The Agenda for Growth is an agreement between the company and its employees.

The CWU said, however, that it would call a strike as soon as the mediation period closed if no agreement was reached. The mediation process will take close to Christmas to be completed, and may be longer. In return, the CWU committed to an industrial stability framework with defined processes and strict timescales to resolve disputes.
