A 30-year-old man was arrested after a police officer was fatally shot during a routine patrol in New Orleans early Friday.

The officers returned fire and the suspect, who was struck, fled to an apartment, Harrison said.

The fallen officer, who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, was rushed to an area hospital where he passed away, Harrison told reporters outside the hospital. Authorities say only one officer was injured and transported to UMC where he later died.

A woman identifying herself as a resident there said one building with about four apartments was evacuated as police appeared to be searching for a suspect.

"This hurts, I can't begin to tell you how much this hurts", Harrison added.

Meanwhile, the attacker apparently hid in a nearby apartment before he surrendered and was taken to the hospital.
