General Motors ( GM ) reportedly plans to idle a Detroit factory for six weeks starting in mid-November due to weak sales.
The plant employs about 1,500.
GM also plans to lower the assembly line speed at the plant starting October 20.

According to the Wall Street Journal, roughly 1,500 workers will be affected at GM'S Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant, which produces four auto models that are seeing sluggish demand: the Buick LaCrosse, the Cadillac CT-6 sedan, the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid, and the Chevrolet Impala. Along with the large sedans, the Chevrolet Volt is also assembled at the plant.
GM and its peers have been cutting production at auto plants as consumers have rapidly shifted to buying sport utility vehicles. Sales of the Volt fell 6 percent and Impala 31 percent, while sales of Cadillac's CT6 increased more than 50 percent.
The automaker's stock fell as much as 2.9 percent Thursday in NY, the biggest intraday drop since August 1.

"While the initial headline interpretation may be negative, we actually view it positively", Citi analyst Itay Michaeli wrote in a note Thursday. GM says the action should stabilize production at the factory.
GM won't comment on specific production plans, but did say it intends to keep current production in line with demand.
