Authorities said they feared Cameron may have been attacked by crocodiles after clothing and a walking stick were found near a creek known to contain a number of the animals.

He added that as the items were "located near (a) creek bank, we can not rule out the possibility of a croc attack".

"We have also located some biological matter which we believe to be human remains and these are being tested in Cairns", Acting Inspector Ed Lukin said on Thursday.

Ms Cameron's devastated family conceded they were of the "firm belief" Anne had "passed away in tragic circumstances" as they waited for DNA testing to come back.

Anne Cameron, 79, was reported missing from the Ozcare aged care facility at Port Douglas on Tuesday.

The forensic tests should be completed by Friday morning, and police and SES are continuing to search for the missing woman.
