Sony to adapt Settlers of Catan for the big screen

Despite concerns about the lack of success with video and board game movie adaptations, Hollywood continues to look for new properties to convert to screens big and small.

"We're excited to be working with Sony to bring the iconic world of Catan to life", said producer Gail Katz. The project will be overseen by Andrea Giannetti (Inferno, Passengers) for Columbia. He added that he was also a huge fan of the game and he believed on the endless opportunities that the movie will inspire its viewers, Entertainment Weekly reported. A global phenomenon, Catan has sold over 25 million copies in dozens of languages, which means that it has destroyed approximately 25 million friendships.

However, it's far from a plot-heavy game; aside from a vague mention that you are playing some of the first inhabitants of the island of Catan, there's no real story to speak of. But Peter Berg's 2012 Battleship - not so much. Personally I think most of the fun is in the gameplay and not really the world, but if they can make a full-length movie about emojis, someone will probably pull out something decent with Settlers of Catan. And while this is probably the most famous designer board game in the world, considered the classic gateway game for people looking to dip their toe into the hobby beyond Risk and Monopoly and Sorry, this is also downright weird.
