Federal extension keeps Maine licenses valid as federal ID

During the grace period, ME driver's licenses and IDs will be accepted as valid identification for federal purposes, including entrance to federal facilities, said Kristen Muszynski, spokeswoman for the Secretary of State's Office.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced a REAL ID enforcement grace period through January 22, 2018, which means that Pennsylvania residents will not face access issues when entering federal facilities through at least that date.

Minnesota is getting more time to comply with REAL ID.

Officials with the governor's office and the state Department of Public Safety pointed to a September 13 statement from Dayton's office, issued after Dayton's chief of staff met with federal officials to deliver Dayton's request for a yearlong extension. According to PennDOT, 27 jurisdictions have requested extensions during the latest round. It expects to begin issuing the new licenses in October 2018. The federal law sets standards for how states should issue forms of photographic identification. After years of debate, the Minnesota Legislature passed a Real ID bill earlier this year, which Dayton signed in May. Passage of that law has allowed the state to continue working toward compliance.
