The Election Commission is set to announce elections to the Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh assemblies on Thursday evening.

While on a Gujarat visit to check the poll preparations, Chief Election Commissioner A K Joti has already said that the elections will be held in December but he can not give a firm date.

"The term of the Gujarat Assembly ends on January 22, so the election will have to be completed in December".

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A K Joti had said Tuesday that the voter-verified paper audit trail (VVPAT) will be used in over 50,000 booths in Gujarat.

The Election Commission is likely to hold a two-phase poll in Gujarat and single-phased polling in Himachal.

While Gujarat election is the Government's prime concern, Himachal Pradesh is on the priority so far as the Election Commission is concerned.

As per the reports, the Gujarat polls likely to be held in December. Congress has already announced Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh as the party's chief ministerial candidate last week. Congress will win 45 seats or even more. Earlier this year, the VVPAT system was first used in Goa polls.

"Elections will have to be held in December as the term of the current Gujarat assembly is coming to end in the third week of January next", Jyoti said in response to a query on media reports and some politicians claiming that polls were going to be held in December. Since 1985, the state has never re-elected an incumbent and the Congress and BJP have exchanged power.

Meanwhile, eyeing the assembly polls, the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) and Congress have begun rigorous election campaign in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh.
