Last night exuberant Italian authorities did little to hide their glee, going out of their way to remind the public of Firth's award-winning performance as the stammering King George VI.
Firth, who is married to environmentalist Livia Giuggioli, says he has become a dual citizen and that his wife is applying for British nationality.
The couple first met in 1995 and they married two years later. He now holds a dual passport for both Italy and the UK.
In a light-hearted statement, the 57-year-old said that the idea seemed "sensible" in the current political climate following Britain's decision to leave the EU.

Firth also spoke briefly about his marriage to wife Livia: 'I married into Italy (and anyone will tell you when you marry an Italian you don't just marry one person; you marry a family and perhaps an entire country...).
