Actor Colin Firth becomes Italian citizen

Colin-Firth

He may be famed for portraying the quintessential Englishman but for Italy British actor Colin Firth has “amore” and more

Last night exuberant Italian authorities did little to hide their glee, going out of their way to remind the public of Firth's award-winning performance as the stammering King George VI.

Firth, who is married to environmentalist Livia Giuggioli, says he has become a dual citizen and that his wife is applying for British nationality.

The couple first met in 1995 and they married two years later. He now holds a dual passport for both Italy and the UK.

In a light-hearted statement, the 57-year-old said that the idea seemed "sensible" in the current political climate following Britain's decision to leave the EU.

Firth also spoke briefly about his marriage to wife Livia: 'I married into Italy (and anyone will tell you when you marry an Italian you don't just marry one person; you marry a family and perhaps an entire country...). "Like nearly everybody I have a passionate love of Italy and joining my wife and kids in being dual citizens will be a huge privilege".

On the other hand, multiple European Union countries, such as Germany, France and Ireland have reported the apparent surge in people with British nationality seeking a new citizenship post the Brexit issue.

The Italian announcement came just hours after British Prime Minister Theresa May flew to Florence to make a keynote speech to try to revive stalled Brexit negotiations and reassure anxious business leaders.
