Iran's Zarif blasts Trump's 'ignorant hate speech' at UN

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has described US President Donald Trump's speech at the UN General Assembly as "ignorant, empty and populist", after the latter criticised Tehran and called the nuclear deal with it as "an embarrassment".

"The US stances do not reflect power and a higher position against Iran, but rather a complete failure, weakness and anger", Ayatollah Khamenei stressed.

He went on to say that Trump revealed the "true face" of the U.S., which is that of a "corrupt and bullying state", to the whole world when he made "slanderous accusations against Iran" in his United Nations speech. He also hinted he might not recertify a 2015 nuclear deal with Tehran when it comes up for a mid-Oct. deadline.

Trump's hostile speech against Iran at the United Nations was not positive in any way to the United States, Khamenei said, as reported by Xinhua - which Antara monitored in Jakarta, early Friday (22/9).

"The foolish, very ugly, and ignoble speech of the United States president, with its gangster and cowboy language full of sheer lies, is rooted in their anger, frustration, and light-headedness", Ayatollah Khamenei said on Thursday.

The JCPOA or commonly known as the Iran Nuclear Deal was the result of two years of intense multi-party talks, and has been widely praised by the global community and endorsed by the UN Security Council as part of Resolution 2231, Rouhani said.

He pledged the United States would be "partners in your work" to make the organization a more effective force for world peace. The nuclear deal , Rouhani said, is evidence that Iran is committed to engaging with that worldwide community.

"The Iranian government masks a corrupt dictatorship behind the false guise of a democracy", Trump said. On October 15, Trump will decide whether the US will stay in the Iran nuclear deal, an agreement between the US, Iran, and European and Asian powers that lifted a series of punishing economic sanctions in exchange for Tehran accepting strict curbs on its nuclear-related activities.

However, on Wednesday, the United States envoy to the UN, Nikki Haley, said that Trump's speech to the UN General Assembly did not necessarily indicate a U.S. intention to withdraw from the deal.

Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani said Trump's stance will fail to appeal to the world's public opinion and will only deal another blow to the credibility of global agreements.
