While chemotherapy could have extended her life and shrunk the tumour, the effects on babies in the first trimester are yet to be tested and could have caused her to miscarry.

A MI baby, whose mother declined cancer treatments in an effort to save the newborn's life, has died, her family announced on Facebook.

The family said Life Lynn was doing well in the days following her birth, but took a turn for the worse last week.

"We're pro-life", Nick DeKlyen, Carrie's husband, told the Detroit Free Press. "Carrie is now rocking her baby girl", according to the Facebook post on the Cure 4 Carrie page.

Sonya Nelson says her niece, Life Lynn DeKlyen, died Wednesday evening at University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. I have no explanation of why this happened, but I do know Jesus loves us and someday we will know why.

Now her baby girl has died, too, the family announced Thursday on Facebook. She remained on life support and was nourished through a feeding tube and oxygen while doctors closely monitored her unborn baby.

"The grief we feel is nearly unbearable, please be praying for our family", he added. The day after Life's birth, doctors removed DeKlyen's feeding and breathing tubes, and she died September 9.

"We don't have any answers", Nelson said, adding "the cards were kind of stacked against her" after being born at 24 weeks and five days into the pregnancy - about "the earliest you can survive".

"My wife loves the Lord and she loves her children more than anything", Nick DeKlyen said after his wife's death. When doctors told her she would need to terminate the pregnancy in order to stay in the clinical trial, the family chose to have the baby. "That's what she wanted, and I supported her", he said.

The DeKlyens are from the western MI city of Wyoming.

"Not in this life, but after my time is up I'll be with her again in Heaven", he said.

The couple had six children together: Elijah, 18, Isaiah, 16, Nevaeh, 11, Leila, four, Jez, two and Life, two weeks. "Our team is saddened by the losses of Carrie and Life, and we hope their friends and family can find comfort and peace from their memories".
