Puppies Infect Humans With Bacterial Illness

Whole genome sequencing showed samples of Campylobacter isolated from the stool of puppies sold through Petland in Florida were closely related to Campylobacter isolated from the stool of an ill person in Ohio.

Thirty-nine people in the USA contracted an infection called Campylobacter from puppies this year, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention said in an outbreak notice on Monday.

Campylobacter is a bacterial infection passed through fecal matter. It is often a foodborne disease that affects around 2 million people in the US alone on an annual basis.

As of September 11, the agency noticed the signs of a campylobacter outbreak as 39 people reported such symptoms.

According to the CDC, at least 39 people across seven states have confirmed or suspected cases of Campylobacter bacteria, which can cause diarrhea, abdominal pain and fever. Nine of the victims needed hospitalization services, yet there was no fatal outcome for any of them.

The illnesses started from September 15, 2016 to August 12, 2017, with the most recent illness reported on September 1, 2017.

Usually, not all people report their symptoms and the infection goes undetected.

Nearly every patient recovers within five days without treatment, though drinking extra fluids is recommended. However, there are cases of complications which led to paralysis and even death.
