Asked how close he came to leaving Arsenal in the summer, the France striker said: 'That's a very private decision because, it's true, I was close.

"Actually that's a very private decision because it's true that I was close to leaving the club because I said that I wanted to play", said Giroud.

Giroud admits that he came close to finding the exit door at Arsenal in the summer, but following consultations with his family and friends he chose to continue with the Gunners.

'I thought the story was not over at Arsenal. The club has given me a lot, I want to win some more trophies.

"I said to the boss "our story is not finished" and everyone was pleased with that".

Ahead of Arsenal's Europa League opener with Koln, Giroud revealed that he remained in north London to win trophies after approaching his friends and family for advice.

Giroud is one goal short of reaching the landmark figure of 100 goals for Arsenal. "I hope it happens as quickly as it can".

While Giroud wants to stay put, full-back Mathieu Debuchy has revealed he was unable to leave during the transfer window despite being told he could depart for free.
