The Los Angeles Lakers will retire Kobe Bryant's jersey numbers 8 and 24 on December 18 when it hosts the defending champions Golden State Warriors, the team announced on Wednesday.

He was also named as the Most Valuable Player during the 2007-2008 National Basketball Association season. Bryant is eligible to enter the Hall of Fame in 2021, but the Lakers decided not to wait for that formality to enshrine Kobe in their own exclusive club.

If he can once again have a solid season for the revamped Lakers roster, he will be able to set himself up for a possible contract extension as soon as next year. Rob Pelinka, Bryant's longtime agent, became the Lakers' general manager in February when Buss put Johnson in charge of the front office.

Johnson is, perhaps purposefully, vague when it comes to distinguishing which Mt. Rushmore (NBA or Lakers) would include Bryant.
