Media Services Warriors form jersey partnership with Rakuten

The Warriors' emergence as a global brand has created major sponsorship opportunities.

The Golden State Warriors have agreed to a three-year, $60 million deal with Japanese tech firm Rakuten to wear a patch on their jerseys, according to ESPN's Darren Rovell.

Golden State's agreement with Rakuten is reportedly worth almost double the one between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Goodyear, which is now the NBA's second most lucrative deal. Its black and slate jerseys will have a white version of the logo.

Rakuten, which owns Ebates, Viber and Kobo, will do more than just sponsor Golden State's jerseys.

Still, Rakuten's advertising deal dwarfs the company's 4-year, $235 million uniform advertising deal with soccer club FC Barcelona.

"We actually had multiple finalists", Bowers said. "So we felt in order to grow our global vision, we had to be aligned with a global brand".

In the first year the National Basketball Association will allow advertising on jerseys, the Warriors will wear Rakuten's red and black patch near the left shoulder.

There is no league mandate on what type of jersey -logo, non-logo, or both -teams must sell.

"We are thrilled to partner with the Golden State Warriors, one of the most successful organizations in sports today and one that shares our passion for positivity, teamwork and optimism", said Hiroshi Mikitani, Rakuten's founder and CEO. "We signed a partner we had never done business with before".

The Warriors have had a slew of success since shredding their way to the NBA Finals and finishing the season on a 16-1 run, dishing out contracts accordingly by retaining all their key assets, including Iguodala.

The Rakuten partnership also includes entitlement to the Warriors Practice Facility, now named the Rakuten Performance Center, along with a significant representation with the Warriors traveling party and additional sales and marketing elements including in-arena signage, digital, social and radio. On top of that, Rakuten will also be the Warriors' official e-commerce partner and work with the team to coordinate video-on-demand and affiliate marketing. The Rakuten Kobo eReaders will become the Official E-Reader Partner of the Warriors.

The Warriors won the 2017 NBA Championship, the fifth title in franchise history and second in the last three years.
