Irma Makes Landfall, Lashes at Southern Florida

Irma hit Florida as a Category 4 hurricane on Sunday (10 September), but it has since been downgraded to a tropical storm. This was just after it had intensified into a Category 5 storm, and the day before it reached peak strength. The ocean storm had been the strongest kind of hurricane - a Category 5 - as it moved through the Caribbean area last week.

Gusts forecast to top 60 miles per hour through the afternoon rendered cities across the region ghost towns as the week began with most people staying home from work and off the roads.

Florida Governor Rick Scott, who flew over the Florida Keys on Monday, said he "didn't see the damage I thought I would see" and that storm surges had not been as bad as expected. Officials closed major bridges.

About 6.5 million homes in Florida, two thirds of the total, are without power after Hurricane Irma cut a deadly path through the U.S. state, officials say.

At least five people died of storm-related injuries in Florida as the massive hurricane barreled across the Sunshine State. Cities flooded, power lines were downed and trees were uprooted across the state. Gov. FEMA chief Brock Long said some areas of South Florida will not have electrical power for weeks.
