That's been the case Monday with Tropical Storm Irma in Columbus.
The county is located in southwest Georgia, where Irma's center was churning northwestward toward Alabama on Monday afternoon.
This storm in particular, which has generated sustained winds in excess of 50 miles per hour, caused widespread damage to trees, power lines and power poles.
Once the storm leaves affected areas, Georgia Power will wait until conditions are safe for damage assessment teams to enter the field and begin the restoration process. Collectively, Georgia's customer-owned EMCs provide electricity and related services to 4.4 million people, almost half of Georgia's population, across 73 percent of the state's land area.
More than 800,000 Georgia Power and EMC customers mostly in coastal and south Georgia were without power and around 800 flights had been canceled at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. "With the whole state hit like this, it's going to spread our resources".
Customers around Savannah, Columbus, Metro Atlanta, etc. are now being affected by the outages. Customers can report and check the status of an outage 24 hours a day by contacting Georgia Power at 888-891-0938.
Check Out AIB feat. Kangana Ranaut
Impossible! On national television, she's going on saying that she's (Kangana) is like my daughter (Sana)... It's really a small challenge because if she has filed it, the whole exercise wouldn't take her long.
"There is not a region within this state that has not been affected by some power outages", said Paul Bowers, Georgia Power president and CEO.
Georgia EMC is the statewide trade association representing the state's 41 EMCs, Oglethorpe Power Corp., Georgia Transmission Corp. and Georgia System Operations Corp.
Columbus had nearly 34,000 customers with outages, while Macon had more than 60,000.

Light drinking 'does no harm in pregnancy'
Overall, the researchers backed this view, saying the lack of evidence of harm was not the same as proof that it is fine to drink. The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says that there is "no safe level of alcohol use during pregnancy".
