More than 1 million lose power as Hurricane Irma hits

A tropical storm warning was issued for Georgia - including Athens, Georgia where the University of Georgia is located - on Sunday morning.

The state of emergency now includes all 159 counties in Georgia.

- Secure any outdoor items that could be moved by high winds and cause damage.

- Charge all necessary electronics, including cell phones and tablets, so you can stay connected even if the power is out.

He said Trump's decision would "stifle the dreams of some of the most vibrant people in our community". The announcement of the end of DACA had been made by Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Tuesday.

"The network of rural roads may be rendered impassable throughout the state of Georgia, isolating residences and farms from access to public services", the governor said Sunday.

As Georgia prepares for storm impacts beginning overnight, residents are urged to finalize all prestorm preparations prior to sunset tonight and to shelter in place through Tuesday, the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency said in a press release on Sunday afternoon. Customers can report and check the status of an outage 24 hours a day by contacting Georgia Power at 888-891-0938.

Georgia Power's electric generating plants are also prepared for Hurricane Irma, according to the Georgia Power statement.

Georgia Power offered the following tips and resources for customers to make use of before, during and after the storm. Safety systems at US nuclear plants, including Georgia's Plants Vogtle and Hatch, are created to withstand significant hazard events, including hurricane force winds and flooding.

About 1 million customers were without power in Florida, and almost 7 million people were under evacuation orders by Saturday night as the storm moved from Cuba into the Florida Straits.
