The production of motor vehicles, trailers and semi trailers grew at the fastest rate since March 2009 at 13.7%.

The UK manufacturing industry recorded its first "significant" growth of the year in July, official figures reveal.

The latest ONS data for July also showed new private housing construction output fell by £95m (3.9%) compared to June.

Britain's total trade deficit for goods and services also remained unchanged at £2.9bn, with a boost in goods exported to the European Union offset by a fall in exports to the rest of the world.

United Kingdom manufacturing output is proving stronger than expected, official figures confirmed on Friday, as export and import prices for goods fell as the pound strengthened slightly.

Manufacturing production however strengthened 0.5%, more than the 0.3% the market was expecting after a flat prior month, with the largest contribution coming as transport equipment grew 7.6%.

However the data showed little signs of improvement elsewhere, with construction output dropping as housebuilding slowed.

Second-quarter economic growth was above the 0.2% growth seen in the preceding three months, but still only less than a half of the 0.7% expansion seen at the end of a year ago. "As a result, we remain optimistic that growth should hold up fairly well in the second half of the year, rather than slow".
