Interim Opposition Leader Rich Coleman issued the following statement after Plecas was elected as Speaker, explaining that Plecas had been removed from the BC Liberal caucus: "Every member of the Legislative Assembly has the right to for the position of Speaker". He said it would be inappropriate for a Liberal to prop up the NDP-Green alliance by becoming Speaker.

A by-election to replace Clark has to be called within six months of her August resignation. Premier John Horgan was the first to congratulate Plecas following his move into the Speaker's chair. Judith Guichon, said British Columbians can expect reforms to provincial campaign finance laws that "eliminate corporate and union donations, put strict limits on individual contributions and make sure that only people living in B.C. can donate to our political parties". "Darryl is known by his colleagues in the legislature as a person of exceptional ethics and high moral standards", he said.
