He originally hurt his knee in a December game, missing the Dolphins' final three regular season contests and a playoff loss to the Steelers, then opted to treat his partially torn ligament with stem-cell therapy and a course of rehabilitation.

Tannehill left practice on August 3 with a hyperextended left knee that "concerned" the Dolphins coaching staff, especially since it was the same knee that ended his 2016 season prematurely.

Tannehill won the No. 1 job for Miami's opener in his rookie season of 2012 and made 77 consecutive starts before his injury last season.

Miami will have a hard decision to make after this season.

Miami is now banking heavily on Jay Cutler, who was lured out of retirement with a one-year, $10-million contract. In May, Cutler had retired from the National Football League and was hired by Fox Sports as a game analyst, but he is putting that off for a year.

However, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the Dolphins' "fear" was Tannehill would require season-ending surgery. Brandon Doughty and David Fales are further down the Dolphins' quarterback depth chart.

After a short while, though, he rose gingerly to his feet and limped across the line to huge cheers from the 56,000 crowd. Acknowledging Bolt's greatness, Gatlin kneeled and bowed to his longtime adversary moments after the race.

Tannehill will still be around the team this season, Gase said.

Tannehill completed 67.1 percent of his passes previous year, throwing for 2,995 yards, 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions with a career-best 93.5 passer rating in 13 games. Starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill and starting linebacker Raekwon McMillan will miss the entire year with the same devastating injury.
