Bomb Kills At Least 15 In Southwestern Pakistan

At least 15 people have been martyred and dozens wounded - some of them critically - in a bomb attack on a military truck in a high-security neighbourhood of Quetta on Saturday night.

The powerful blast hit as a paramilitary patrol passed by on the road, Baluchistan provincial home minister Sarfraz Bugti said, adding the patrol may have been the target. It said the explosives sparked fires in nearby vehicles.

"We can now confirm that 15 people have died in the explosion today".

In August past year, at least 74 people were killed in a suicide attack on the city's Civil Hospital, while another 60 were killed in an attack on a police academy two months later.

A large number of police, and paramilitary troops rushed to the area and helped rescuers shift the dead and injured to hospitals.

The blast came two days before Pakistan's 70th Independence Day, and the military chief said it was an effort to mar celebrations.

"Our resolve won't succumb to any challenge", Bajwa was quoted as saying in an official tweet from a top military spokesman.

Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi condemned the Quetta bombing and directed the authorities concerned to provide best medical treatment to the injured.

Security forces have cordoned off the blast site for investigations.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the army, said that an on-duty security vehicle was targeted in the blast and added 10 security officials were also injured in the attack.

Bugti said, "It would be unfair to call the incident a security lapse".

Casualties were also confirmed by rescue and hospital sources. A large contingent of security forces also reached the spot. The Balochistan Assembly, Quetta Law College, a private hospital and many offices are located in the area where the explosion occurred.
