Philippe Coutinho has handed in a transfer request at Liverpool

With the Reds' ownership professing their insistence that Coutinho will also be staying, Liverpool's Spanish-language Twitter account could not resist a jibe.

It has been a dramatic day, with Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool's owners, issuing a statement at 10am to say that they would not consider selling Coutinho at any price and they expect him to be at the club on September 1.

Liverpool are in desperate need of a few more signings before the transfer window closes, and failing to do that would set the club up to struggle if they ever run into a slew of injuries.

But it may be that Leeds and Villa are left waiting for the Coutinho transfer to come to an end, before they can snap the attacking midfielder up.

LIVERPOOL fans have been forced to watch on in horror as the continuing transfer saga surrounding Philippe Coutinho has raged on.

Coutinho may have made a bold move but Liverpool's stance remains unaltered and his request has been rejected.

The Reds are likely to kick off their campaign at Vicarage Road without the Brazil worldwide, 25, in their usual 4-3-3 formation as he has been unable to train this week due to a back injury.

It's said that the player has been nothing but respectful of the wishes of both his manager and his current employers after Liverpool afforded him a chance to reignite his career back in 2013.

Coutinho will nonetheless be missing from the Watford match with a back problem that could also rule him out of the first leg of a Champions League qualifying play-off away to German club Hoffenheim on Tuesday.
