Disaster struck when two trains - one travelling from Cairo, the other from Port Said - collided in Alexandria, local media reports.

The deadly incident reportedly took place in the Khorshid district on Alexandria's outskirts.

Egypt's transport minister has ordered an investigation into the crash, pledging to "hold accountable" whoever was responsible, state television reported.

The statement did not say what caused the accident، only that the authority's experts would be investigating. Months later a train carrying military conscripts derailed, killing 17 people. Fifty-one people were killed, many of them children. In 2012, a school bus collided with a train at a rail crossing.

Egypt's railway system has a poor safety record, mostly blamed on decades of badly maintained equipment and poor management.

A further 80 people were injured in the crash.
