Twenty three people were salvaged within an hour after a "mishap" during a joint exercise off Queensland.

The Aug. 5 crash in the sea, in which three U.S. Marines remain missing, could heighten concerns of residents in the prefecture over the Osprey.

"I have been advised of an incident involving a United States Marine Corps MV-22 Osprey helicopter off the coast of Shoalwater Bay today", she said.

Osprey have been a part of mishaps resulting in death or injuries in recent years.

In December a year ago, a US Marine MV-22 Osprey crash-landed in waters off the main island of Okinawa.

In December, several crew members of an Osprey were injured and had to be rescued in a mishap off Okinawa in Japan.

Small boats and aircraft from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit and Bonhomme Richard Expeditionary Strike Group searched for the missing, the Marine Corps said. Australian Defense Minister Marise Payne said the incident occurred off the coast of Shoalwater Bay in the eastern state of Queensland.

The rescue mission continued overnight, but authorities fear the worst for the marines involved in the crash.

The Osprey is a tiltrotor aircraft with helicopter and plane capabilities.

The Bonhomme Richard Expeditionary Strike Group was in Australia to participate in joint training maneuvers involving more than 33,000 United States and Australian military personnel, which ended two weeks ago. The biennial exercise involved about 30,000 troops and 200 aircraft.
