It added that McMaster "determined that, at this time, a different set of experiences is best-suited to carrying that work forward".

Cohen-Watnick's removal comes after the revelation by The Atlantic on Wednesday of the dismissal of Rich Higgins, another Iran hawk who was the NSC's director of strategic planning.

Apparently, new White House chief of staff John Kelly is unable to stop the war, or is siding with McMaster against Bannon.

But the NSC purge has not gone down smooth with the right-wing media, which has been tarring McMaster since news of the firings broke.

Higgins, a director for strategic planning in the NSC's strategic-planning office, was sacked last month after he penned a memo warning of globalists, leftists and Islamists working on a "Maoist insurgency" to undermine the Trump administration, according to Rosie Gray. He was one of two White House officials who gave Nunes documents that suggested members of Trump's transition were inadvertently swept up in surveillance operations.

Tillerson quoted Trump telling Lavrov, "We need some good news with Russian Federation ", when they met in the Oval Office. He says he and Trump have had policy disagreements, notably over the Iran nuclear deal, which the president opposes.

Cohen-Watnik survived another scrape, after it turned out he was involved in a midnight caper to secretly supply California Representative Devin Nunes, the Republican chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, with classified reports showing Trump and his associates were incidentally swept up in an electronic surveillance of Russian agents by USA spy agencies.

Earlier this year, Cohen-Watnick came under scrutiny for his alleged roundabout role in providing information to GOP Rep. Devin Nunes, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, showing members of Trump's team included in foreign surveillance reports collected by USA intelligence.
