Ipswich mayor Sarah Barber led commemorations for the centenary of the battle of Passchendaele at the Ipswich Cenotaph in Christchurch Park.

One hundred years ago saw the start of one of the most horrific battles in human history.

Watched by some 200 descendants of those who fought, he said: "Today, the Menin Gate records nearly 54,000 names of the men who did not return home; the missing with no known grave".

The first, broadcast last night, began with a traditional ceremony attended by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Indian soldiers who fought as part of the British Army during the Raj in 1917 were among thousands of martyrs remembered at a special 100th anniversary ceremony in Belgium today, of one of the bloodiest battles of World War I. Speaking shortly before his death in 2009 at the age of 111, Mr Patch summed up many people's feelings about the war, saying: "All those lives lost for a war finished over a table".
